The Portland Trail Blazers are bringing Rayan Rupert back into the fold. The team announced Sunday that the 20-year-old guard/forward has been recalled from his G League assignment with the Rip City Remix after another strong showing in Portland’s developmental system.
While the Blazers were on the road Saturday in a tough loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Rupert remained in Portland to suit up for the Remix against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Despite a 125-108 defeat, Rupert put together one of his best performances of the season, finishing with 17 points on 7-13 shooting, 11 rebounds, three assists, and a steal in 34 minutes. He also avoided turnovers, a promising sign for his development.
Earlier in the week, Rupert was dominant in a 129-113 loss to the Windy City Bulls, dropping 24 points on an efficient 10-14 shooting while adding three assists and two rebounds. However, he did struggle with turnovers, committing five in the loss.
Blazers reserve center Duop Reath also made a brief stop in the G League and wasted no time making his presence felt. In his lone appearance of the week, Reath exploded for 36 points and 13 rebounds while taking 28 shots from the field. His performance helped keep the Remix competitive, but it wasn’t enough to secure a win.
Through six games with the Remix this season, Rupert has posted strong all-around numbers, averaging 17.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 3.7 turnovers in 35.2 minutes per game. He’s been highly effective inside the arc, shooting 48.3% from the field, but his three-point shot remains a work in progress—he’s hitting just 15.8% of his attempts from deep on 3.2 shots per game.
Rupert’s return to the Blazers roster raises questions about his role moving forward. The second-year forward has seen limited playing time in the NBA this season, appearing in 35 games while averaging just 7.9 minutes per contest. His G League production suggests he’s making strides, but whether that translates into meaningful minutes for the Blazers remains to be seen.
For now, Rupert’s focus will be on proving he belongs in Portland’s rotation. With the Blazers prioritizing development in a rebuilding year, he should get his opportunities. The question is: will he take advantage of them?
