The Warriors are expected to have a market for Jonathan Kuminga once his trade restriction lifts later this month.
According to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, at least three teams have been linked to Kuminga in league conversations — the Trail Blazers, Pelicans, and Wizards.
Golden State is expected to explore trades involving Kuminga once he becomes eligible after January 14. The 23-year-old forward signed a two-year, $48.5 million contract last offseason to resolve his restricted free agency. The second year is a team option, a structure that would allow a new team to tear up the deal and negotiate a longer-term contract next summer.
Kuminga’s situation with the Warriors has been strained. League sources have indicated that he believes his development has stalled under head coach Steve Kerr, and the relationship between player and coach has been described as rocky.
Kuminga has been in and out of the rotation this season, appearing in 18 games and averaging 11.8 points and 6.2 rebounds.
That frustration dates back to the offseason, when Kuminga pushed for a move to the Kings. Sacramento explored a deal that included Malik Monk and a protected future first-round pick, and Kuminga had positive discussions with head coach Doug Christie about a featured role.
All of that said, Golden State appears headed toward a resolution. With multiple teams monitoring the situation and Kuminga’s eligibility date approaching, his name is expected to remain prominent in trade talks as the deadline nears.
