Shams Charania of ESPN reported on May 12 that Giannis Antetokounmpo is open-minded about leaving the Milwaukee Bucks for the first time in his career.
Since winning the 2021 championship against the Phoenix Suns, the Bucks have won only one postseason series.
Milwaukee will not trade Antetokounmpo unless the future Hall of Famer requests a trade. Antetokounmpo doesn't have a no-trade clause in his contract, so if he does request a trade, he can't control where he lands.
Some believe Antetokounmpo should request a trade this summer since Damian Lillard could miss all of next season recovering from his left Achilles tendon tear. If Antetokounmpo requests out of Milwaukee, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report believes the San Antonio Spurs should trade for the two-time MVP.
Favale proposed that the Spurs trade Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Jeremy Sochan and multiple draft picks to the Bucks for Antetokounmpo.
"This is a lot for the Spurs to send out, but they'd end up with a core of Giannis, Stephon Castle, Devin Vassell, De'Aaron Fox and Victor Wembanyama," Favale wrote. "That's a contender with a pretty open-ended window.
"It would eventually get prohibitively expensive, but they have two years left before Wemby's rookie-scale deal expires, giving them adequate time to figure out the new dynamics and flesh out the supporting cast accordingly."
Antetokounmpo averaged 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 0.9 steals and 1.2 blocks for the Bucks this season in 67 games. He's an MVP finalist.
The Bucks signed Antetokounmpo to a three-year, $175 million extension in October 2023. Antetokounmpo, 30, will make $54.1 million next season.
Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, a one-time Finals MVP, a one-time Defensive Player of the Year and a nine-time All-Star with career averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks.
The Spurs, who have won five championships in franchise history, would have a lethal "Big 3" of Antetokounmpo, Wembanyama and Fox if this trade idea went down.
