The Golden State Warriors’ two-timeline strategy hasn’t paid off yet.
From 2015 to 2019, the Golden State Warriors earned five trips to the NBA Finals and won three titles in the process.
However, after Kevin Durant’s departure and Stephen Curry’s injury, the Warriors’ front office decided to rely on the NBA Draft to add young blood to the team.
That led to the Warriors drafting James Wiseman in 2020 and Jonathan Kuminga in 2021. The decision was made to ensure the Dubs stayed competitive if Curry had gone through a massive decline.
While the Warriors quickly gave up on Wiseman, Kuminga is still a member of the team. But due to Curry’s incredible longevity, Kuminga’s growth has been hindered.
After all, head coach Steve Kerr prefers playing veteran stars over young prospects. Keeping that in mind, former Warriors GM Bob Myers was asked about drafting Kuminga.
“There was a contingent of fans and media and some people in the organization that thought, let’s get somebody more ready to play,” Myers said on the Tom Tolbert Show.
He then added: “But when you draft high, what I believe and we believe, it’s a chance to take a swing and get that Tracy McGrady type guy.”
Myers’ bet has yet to pay off. If anything, Kuminga’s relationship with the Warriors has only gotten sour with each passing year.
So, what would Myers do if he had known Curry would still be a top NBA star as a 37-year-old?
The former Warriors decision-maker boldly claimed he would have drafted Kuminga in 2021, regardless of how Curry’s career panned out.
“Had we known [Steph would still be this good], would we have done something different, on that specific fact I don’t think so.
“We drafted who we thought was going to be the best player. That’s kind of what we did, that was the thinking behind it,” Myers stated.
As of now, Kuminga is expected to be traded soon. So, unless he repairs his relationship with the Warriors, fans won’t agree with Myers’ defense of his two-timeline strategy.
