Former Golden State Warriors general manager Bob Myers recalls his conversation with Stephen Curry.
The Golden State Warriors’ 2016 NBA Finals defeat at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers is undoubtedly the biggest upset of all time.
After all, the 73-9 Warriors were up 3-1 before the LeBron James-led Cavs erased the deficit and were crowned the champions of the NBA.
That summer, the Warriors bounced back by signing Kevin Durant to the roster. But what did Stephen Curry think of the decision?
Durant joining the Warriors in 2016 essentially ruined the balance of power in the NBA. The Dubs were unstoppable over the next two seasons as they won the 2017 and 2018 NBA Championships.
In hindsight, the only thing other than injuries that could have stopped the Warriors were ego clashes. With that said, former Warriors GM Bob Myers recalled how Curry reacted to the prospect of KD’s arrival.
“When the possibility of Kevin Durant came up, in music that’s the equivalent of Bono hearing that John Lennon wants to join U2, that doesn’t happen,” Myers began on the Tom Tolbert Show.
“Everybody has an ego. I was there when I asked him, ‘Do you want Durant on the team?’ And I did it in person because it’s a big body language thing.
“I said, ‘Steph, how do you feel about Durant?’ This was after we lost in the Finals, and if he did this, ‘Yeah if you think man you’re the GM if that’s what you want,’ that’s a no,” Myers explained.
By then, Curry was one of the best players in the world, and coming on the heels of a season where he won the first-ever unanimous NBA MVP.
“Or if he goes, ‘Hmmm, yeah maybe… that’s a no.’ The only yes is this, ‘yes definitely, shall I call him?’ And that’s what he said. Unequivocally,” Myers revealed.
By now, it’s clear that Curry green-lit the decision to sign Durant. But was it only because the Warriors’ embarrassing 2016 NBA Finals loss?
Well, according to Myers, the Dubs always planned to pursue the Slim Reaper in the summer of 2016.
“We always need Durant. The only way that doesn’t work is if I go to the team and they say no. You’ve got to talk to your players,” he concluded.
Now, that’s an excellent way to keep a team’s top stars happy. But could this also be the reason why a Durant-Warriors reunion fell through last season?
