Boston Celtics’ Shocking $135 Million Jrue Holiday Contract Creates More Questions Than Answers, Claims Analyst
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

Jrue Holiday has been a productive member of the Boston Celtics, becoming one of the key factors behind the team’s dominant performance in the East. His performance left such a huge impression on the C’s front office that the team gave him a mind-boggling extension that broke NBA social media circles for a while.

While players deserve to get as much money as they deserve, one analyst questions whether it was the right move to give Holiday that much money. He makes an argument that questions the Celtics’ logic in drafting the contract.

Adam Taylor questions the Boston Celtics’ $135-million contract for Jrue Holiday

Yardbarker’s Adam Taylor understands that Holiday has become a core member of the Celtics rotation and must be kept in the team.

Many will argue that the decision was made so the Boston Celtics will be able to save on luxury tax. They would have paid a huge amount next season if Holiday decided to opt for his player options with the C’s.

The money saved will be a boon for the Celtics as they try to win with their current core of players. However, Taylor questions if they can keep their core with Jaylen Brown entering the first year of his Super Max contract and Jayson Tatum also due his own:

Keeping their current core together long-term doesn’t seem like a legitimate possibility. Instead, they must maximize their current window before figuring out how to pivot and retool on the fly. Brad Stevens has constructed a money-guzzling juggernaut. Eventually, the front office will need to pivot.

The Boston Celtics are currently 62-17 with Holiday on the roster. The one-time NBA champion contributes to the team’s success with his 12.5 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists on 48%/41%/83% shooting splits.

However, Holiday is already 33 years old. While players like LeBron James, Stephen Curry, and Kevin Durant are bucking the trend, most players still see a dip in their productivity by the time they reach their mid-30s.

Putting all your money into only a couple of baskets can win you a championship game, but it takes more than that to win an NBA title. It will be interesting to see if the Celtics will be able to win with this core roster two years down the line.
