Brandon Ingram swapped a bad fit for another bad fit

Brandon Ingram was traded to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday. He will team up with Scottie Barnes and RJ Barrett to form part of Toronto's new-look core. Ingram is on an expiring contract. There has been no reporting on whether there's been a verbal commitment to re-sign with the franchise.

On paper, Ingram is a solid addition to the Raptors. He's a three-level scorer, can pass and has the size and length to be a viable wing defender. However, basketball isn't played on paper.

When you look a little closer, it's glaringly obvious that Ingram has some crossover with Barrett and Barnes in terms of skill set. All three like to pressure the rim. None of them are high-level floor spacers. And each of the trio would rather settle for mid-range jumpers than take a step or two out toward the three-point line.

Ingram had similar issues with the Pelicans. Like Toronto, his other co-stars were interior-based operators. Zion Williamson is arguably the biggest downhill threat in the NBA. And CJ McCollum does most of his damage when probing the defense.

When considering this, it's fair to wonder why the Raptors decided to acquire Ingram. The question becomes all the more perplexing when one realizes they let Pascal Siakam leave last season. Although his overall skill set is eerily similar to Ingram's, Siakam is the better player.

Unless the Raptors are willing to let Ingram leave in the summer to clear cap room, the current trade looks flawed. Darko Rajakovic is a talented coach, so maybe he can get his new trio to click. However, if Ingram's fit doesn't yield results, then he's jumped from one bad spot to another. He needs to be on a team with shooting so he can thrive as a rim and mid-range threat.

Unfortunately, with the way the NBA is currently shaping up, any opportunity like that won't come with a contending-level team.
