The Golden State Warriors had been one of the hottest teams in the NBA since the trade deadline.
After the Warriors let Klay Thompson walk in free agency, they had been searching for a true No. 2 option beside Stephen Curry.
Jonathan Kuminga wasn't quite what the Warriors had hoped in terms of being that No. 2 option. Nor was Andrew Wiggins.
Similar to how the Los Angeles Lakers traded for Anthony Davis, the Warriors made a blockbuster trade of sending Wiggins to Miami in exchange for a disgruntled Jimmy Butler.
Since the trade, Butler has seemed like a godsend. It's freed up Curry, allowing him to score much easier than prior to Butler's arrival.
The Warriors lost to the San Antonio Spurs 114-111 on Wednesday night, dropping them to the No. 7 seed. If they can't climb out of that hole by the end of the regular season, they'll be forced to participate in the NBA Play-In Tournament.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst was blunt when talking about how Golden State blew the lead to a team that's eliminated from any type of playoff contention.
"Clearly the Warriors are flawed, look what happened last night," Windhorst said. "Now, we know they're going to have to play through the buzzer on Sunday night. Now they've got to press the gas all the way down.
"Now they know there's a real chance they have to immediately turn around and play next Tuesday or Wednesday and it's possible they have to play next Friday if things don't go well."

The Western Conference standings are incredibly tight. With not many games remaining, every game matters as teams jockey for positioning.
The Warriors take on the Portland Trail Blazers on the road Friday night before returning home to take on the Los Angeles Clippers in the regular season finale. There's almost no doubt it will have serious seeding implications.
