Bronny James making progress in G League play

After facing intense scrutiny during the NBA Summer League and questions about his readiness for the top level of basketball, Bronny James has steadily begun to silence his critics in the relative calm of the NBA G League.

Playing for the South Bay Lakers, the 20-year-old has had the opportunity to grow and refine his game away from the relentless spotlight of the NBA.

Through his first 10 games with South Bay, James is averaging 16.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.4 steals per game. While his shooting numbers remain inconsistent, the young guard has demonstrated continuous improvement as the season has progressed.

The beginning of James' G League journey was rocky, as the immense expectations placed on him were evident. He struggled to find his rhythm in his first two games, playing in front of sold-out crowds.

He made just four of his first 19 shots from the field, recording six and four points, respectively, in those contests. The pressure was undeniably high, as fans eagerly anticipated his every move.

However, a breakout performance on Dec. 12 against the Valley Suns hinted at what was to come. Despite the loss, the 6-foot-3 guard erupted for 30 points, showcasing his ability to score in a variety of ways, including hitting three three-pointers.

That game marked the beginning of a four-game stretch in which he scored in double figures in every contest, further showing his growing confidence.

Though his performance in the G League Tip-Off Tournament finale was more subdued, with only six points in a win over the Osceola Magic, James recorded a career-high seven assists, proving his all-around game was progressing.

The Lakers rookie's play has notably improved in the regular season. Over a recent three-game stretch, he has averaged 23 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals while shooting a blistering 45.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Last time out, in a victory over the Rip City Remix, James scored a career-high 31 points in 36 minutes of action. In that game, he hit five three-pointers, demonstrating his growing shooting touch.

The game prior, he came close to a double-double, tallying 23 points and nine rebounds. Over his last eight games, James has reached double figures in seven of them, solidifying his role as a key contributor for South Bay.

The Lakers are hopeful that their rookie can follow in the footsteps of other former South Bay players who have found success in the NBA. The G League affiliate has a long history of developing talent, particularly guards, with players such as Jordan Clarkson, Alex Caruso, Gary Payton II and Josh Hart all having spent time with South Bay before making their mark in the NBA.

Though Bronny has been under a media microscope for years, the transition to the G League has given him a much-needed chance to develop without the constant pressure of NBA expectations.

The G League provides a more manageable environment where James can hone his skills and adjust to the professional level at his own pace.

It has not been without challenges, but so far, James’ G League journey has been marked by steady growth and improvement. His time in the G League will ensure that he remains sharp and ready for a potential call-up to the NBA when the Lakers need him.

In fact, according to Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times, the Lakers have already recalled James for their six-game East Coast road trip, further indicating the confidence they have in his continued development.
