Tarek Fattal of the Los Angeles Daily News and ESPN have confirmed that Bronny James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James, recently underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee.
James mentioned that he tore his meniscus weeks ago during a live Twitch stream but didn't get into specifics about the injury. If spring high school basketball seasons are permitted in the state of California despite lingering COVID-19 concerns, it's possible James could miss the entire campaign while recovering.
Per Fattal, James is a five-star-rated recruit for the class of 2023. ESPN lists the son of the four-time NBA champion at 6-foot-2 and as a guard. James could be out for three months, per TMZ Sports, but is expected to make a full recovery.
James has been linked with college basketball powerhouses such as the Duke Blue Devils, Kentucky Wildcats and Ohio State Buckeyes, among others. As Colin Ward-Henninger wrote for CBS Sports last April, the so-called "one-and-done" rule that forces a recently graduated high school player to spend a season in college or take part in a G League initiative before completing a jump to the NBA likely isn't going away anytime soon, so all may have to wait until 2024 to see James follow in his famous father's footsteps.
