There was some optimism surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s status for Wednesday’s game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat. The former back-to-back MVP has been dealing with a groin injury that has forced him to miss his team’s last three games. Antetokounmpo, however, was upgraded to questionable against the Heat, which provided some hope for his availability for the game.

The Bucks have lost all three games without Antetokounmpo, who is currently averaging 31.2 points on 62.9% shooting, 10.8 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 1.2 blocks in 31.8 minutes per contest. Milwaukee is currently riding a five-game losing streak and enters Wednesday’s matchup with an 8-10 record.

Antetokounmpo sustained his injury on Nov. 17 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was forced to exit the game in the second quarter and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the contest due to a left groin strain.

The nine-time All-Star has been working hard behind the scenes to get himself ready for his return. Unfortunately for the Bucks, they will need to navigate through Wednesday’s game without their cornerstone superstar. This is after the team announced right before tip-off that Antetokounmpo has officially been ruled out due to a left adductor strain.

It is worth noting that this was the first time Antetokounmpo was listed as anything other than out for a game since he sustained the injury more than a week ago. The questionable tag was a step in the right direction for the 6-foot-11 forward, but the developments on Tuesday night just prove that Antetokounmpo is not ready to return just yet.

His next chance to play will be on Friday against the New York Knicks. The Bucks will be on the road, potentially allowing Antetokounmpo to return for a high-profile matchup at Madison Square Garden.

In the meantime, with Antetokounmpo sidelined, the likes of Bobby Portis and Jericho Sims are likely to get more opportunities in Milwaukee's frontcourt.
