Bucks’ Kevin Porter Jr. Expected To Decline Option, Hit Free Agency

Milwaukee Bucks guard Kevin Porter Jr. is expected to decline his $2.5 million player option and become an unrestricted free agent, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

The move comes as little surprise given Porter’s resurgence with Milwaukee following a midseason trade from the Clippers. In 30 games with the Bucks, Porter averaged 11.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists in just under 20 minutes per contest. He also appeared in five playoff games, where he posted averages of 11.2 points and 5.4 assists.

Milwaukee is reportedly interested in re-signing the 24-year-old guard, particularly in light of Damian Lillard’s torn Achilles, an injury expected to sideline the All-Star for most, if not all, of next season. As it stands, Porter could be penciled in as the Bucks’ starting point guard unless the team makes a move in free agency or via trade.

Porter, a former first-round pick, began the 2023-24 season overseas in Greece and returned to the NBA after signing with the Clippers in July. He played 45 games for L.A. before being dealt to Milwaukee in February.

His return to the league came after a tumultuous period off the court, including a plea agreement related to misdemeanor assault and harassment charges stemming from a 2023 incident involving his girlfriend. That situation had led to his exit from the Houston Rockets and a pause in his professional career.

The Bucks do not own a first-round pick in this year’s draft and are navigating a tight cap sheet, increasing the value of bringing back a player like Porter on a manageable deal.
