Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks are not having the season they had hoped for. The Bucks are currently 29-42, third in the Central Division and No. 11 in the Eastern Conference. Milwaukee lost its most recent matchup on Monday to Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers 129-96. Guard Gary Trent Jr. led the Bucks with 20 points off the bench.
Giannis has been in and out of the lineup all season due to various injuries. He first injured his calf earlier in the season, causing him to miss extended time. He returned from the calf injury on March 2nd against Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics only to suffer a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise on March 15th against the Indiana Pacers. Giannis is currently out of the lineup for Milwaukee.
Rumors have swirled all season about Giannis potentially leaving Milwaukee. Many expected the superstar to be moved at the trade deadline, but the Bucks appear unwilling to part so easily with a generational talent. Even with rumors heating up about the potential Giannis departure this summer, Milwaukee is doing all it can to make enticing roster moves around him. The Bucks notably signed center Myles Turner from the Indiana Pacers during last free agency. Another move was the signing of guard Cam Thomas on February 8th.
Thomas is a score-first guard who was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 27th pick in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft. He is an electric scorer, having multiple seasons averaging over 20.0 ppg. He played 24 games for the Nets this season before being waived. Milwaukee picked up Thomas on February 8th, hoping the guard could provide a scoring boost.
Thomas appeared in 18 games for the Bucks, averaging 13.5 points per game on 16.6 minutes per game. The scorer was having trouble shooting in Milwaukee, averaging his worst three-point percentage (27.5%) since his rookie season (27.0%), along with the worst free-throw percentage of his career (75.4%). On Monday, Shams Charania of ESPN reported that the Bucks waived Thomas just a few weeks after originally signing him.
"The Milwaukee Bucks are waiving Cam Thomas just weeks after signing him, sources tell ESPN." Shams wrote on X.
