Bulls' Andre Drummond goes perfect from downtown in win over Raptors

Last season in the NBA, the Chicago Bulls were dead last in three-point attempts. As they try to expand their limited three-point game going into the new season, an unlikely marksman has emerged: New center Andre Drummond.

Drummond made all three of his shots from behind the three-point line as the Bulls defeated the Toronto Raptors last night, 115-98. He even added a celebration after the last one.

It's a shocking new facet of his game. Drummond took three three-pointers for the entire 2021-22 season with the Philadelphia 76ers and the Brooklyn Nets, missing all three. He hadn't made a three-pointer in an NBA game since before the pandemic, drilling two in a February 24, 2020 game.

His form looked fine, but the Bulls might not yet be ready to buy Drummond as a three-point threat, considering that he's a career 13.2 percent shooter from beyond the arc. But according to a 2014 study, three-point percentage is extremely variable, and it takes roughly 750 attempts for a player's three-point percentage to reflect his true ability.

Drummond has taken only 114 triples in his 10-year professional career, making 15. If that's the case, maybe Drummond, one of the NBA's best rebounders, needs a chance to spread his wings and let it fly from deep.

Chicago's not averse to letting its big men shoot the three, either. Nikola Vucevic took 4.5 three-pointers per game last year, though he only made 31.4 percent. Coach Billy Donovan realizes he needs someone to shoot from distance, with Lonzo Ball out indefinitely and DeMar DeRozan doing most of his work from the mid-range. But Drummond himself has a different priority. This summer in Connecticut, he told CT Insider, "By the time I retire, I’ll go down as the best rebounder ever — if not already."

Maybe he'll become a new archetype - dominant rebounder who also drills threes.
