Bulls guards Zach LaVine, Alex Caruso ruled out Game 5 vs. Bucks

The Chicago Bulls were dealt a double dose of brutal, albeit unsurprising news less than 12 hours before tipoff to their must-win Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series against the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

Caruso has been in the concussion protocol all week long after he departed the team's Game 4 loss on Sunday after getting inadvertently hit by the elbow of Jevon Carter as he drove to the basket. His status remained uncertain on Monday, and reports indicated that he was still not yet ruled out as of Tuesday.

The 28-year-old Caruso has started each of the first four games of the series for Chicago and has averaged 6.3 points, 4.3 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 28.3 minutes per contest. He was limited to 41 games (18 starts) this season due to various injuries, but still averaged career highs in assists (4.0), rebounds (3.6), steals (1.7) and minutes per contest (28.0).

LaVine entered the league's health and safety protocols on Tuesday and it was reported that he was expected to miss Game 5. The two-time All-Star finished the year second on the team in points (24.4) and minutes per game (34.7), while finishing third in assists per contest (4.5).

An eight-year pro, LaVine posted a 47.6% field goal percentage and shot 38.9% from beyond the arc while recording a career-high 85.3% free throw percentage. Through the first four games of the series against Milwaukee, he has averaged 19.3 points, 6.0 assists and 5.3 rebounds, while registering a .429/.375/.933 shooting line.

The winner of the Bucks-Bulls series will take on the second-seeded Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.
