The Chicago Bulls have been on fire to start the year. They were sitting at 5-1 and coming back home to face the 5-1 76ers.
The former OKC point guard has been a catalyst for the Bulls’ 5-1 start. Josh Giddey is averaging 22.2 points per game, 9.2 rebounds per game, and 8.7 assists per game. With him averaging nearly a triple-double, that makes his teammates’ jobs easier. If Bulls fans thought it couldn’t get better than that, they would be wrong.
On Tuesday against the Sixers, Giddey ended the night with 29 points, 15 rebounds, and 12 assists.
His start to the season has been magical, especially in his last two games. In the previous game, Giddey also recorded a triple-double. He finished with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists. His back-to-back triple-doubles are the first by a Bulls player since the GOAT, Michael Jordan, accomplished the feat in the 1988–89 season.
To be part of such legendary company is well-deserved. Giddey has been on a roll and certainly looks like an MVP to start the year.
Chicago was 5-1 to start the year as they suited up to face the 76ers. They started slow, to say the least, allowing Philly to score 45 in the first quarter. They bounced back defensively, holding the 76ers to 30 points in the second. Letting the other team have 75 points at halftime isn’t a recipe for success.
The Bulls trailed 75-56 at halftime and would need a massive second half to come back. Well, they definitely had one, courtesy of Giddey. He helped spur a 9-0 run by Chicago midway through the third quarter to cut the Philly lead down to 14. The Bulls still trailed by 11 points at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter was where the Bulls and their defense flexed their muscles.
They only allowed Philly to score 16 points in the entire quarter! A free throw by PG Tyrese Maxey at the 4:26 mark was the last point the 76ers would score. At that time, the score was 111-104 in favor of Philadelphia. The final 4:26 belonged to Nikola Vucevic as well as Giddey. The latter had a smooth finger-roll layup and a jumper to cut the Bulls’ deficit to one after a couple of Vucevic free throws.
After a couple of missed shots by Joel Embiid and Maxey, the Bulls got the ball back with 14 seconds remaining. Trailing by one in the fourth quarter at home was a great position for this team, considering how the game started. Now it was time to finish, and Giddey and Vucevic were the perfect guys for the job.
Giddey drove through the lane as the clock ticked down. He whipped the ball to the corner, where Vucevic was camped out. The Bulls’ center took aim and shot the three as the seconds ticked off. Bulls and Sixers fans held their breath as the shot was released.
It went through the hoop, and the crowd erupted. Three seconds remained, and the Sixers had the ball. They missed their final attempt, and the Bulls pulled out the win, 113-111.
The Bulls are the number one team in the East. They are going to put up a fight each and every night. Let’s hope they can keep this run going. The next game is Friday against the Bucks in Milwaukee.
