Byron Scott Doesn't Think JJ Redick As The Lakers Head Coach Is A Good Idea
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

Byron Scott expressed skepticism about JJ Redick's candidacy for the Los Angeles Lakers head coaching position, in an exclusive interview with TMZ Sports.

"JJ has no coaching experience whatsoever. And it's hard jumping in that seat as a first-time head coach. I look at some of the other players who played in this league."

"Steve Nash is a guy that comes to mind who played in the NBA, never had any coaching experience, and it didn't work out real well in Brooklyn for him,  so it's a tough tough job and it's really even tougher for guys who've never had any coaching experience."

"I don't know you know why because I don't know JJ... I know he has some respect in the league, you got respect with his podcast and things of that nature but I don't know if he has what it takes to be a great head coach in the NBA but again if he gets that opportunity, we'll find out real soon."

"My advice would be get you a bunch of great assistant coaches. Because they can really alleviate a lot of the pressure and a lot of the things that you're going to be facing as a first-time head coach. So get you some great assistant coaches." (0:08)

Scott voiced concerns about Redick's lack of coaching experience, suggesting that transitioning directly from player to head coach is a challenging leap.

Scott's reservations are rooted in precedent, pointing to the failed experiment with Steve Nash in Brooklyn. Despite Nash's illustrious playing career and the presence of superstars Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving, his lack of coaching experience contributed to inconsistent performance and his eventual dismissal after three seasons.

Instead of Redick, Scott suggested more seasoned candidates like Sam Cassell, an assistant coach in the NBA since 2009, and Mark Jackson, who laid the groundwork for the Golden State Warriors' success before Steve Kerr's tenure. Scott also didn't shy away from proposing his own candidacy, citing his extensive coaching resume, which includes stints with the Nets, Hornets, Cavs, and Lakers, and a Coach of the Year award in 2008.

The Lakers head coaching position remains one of the most prestigious and high-pressure roles in sports, and Scott's comments reflect the broader debate about the merits of hiring a first-time coach for such a significant job. As the Lakers' search continues, Scott's insights underscore the importance of experience and proven success in the coaching ranks.

Steve Kerr Also Didn't Have Coaching Experience But He Turned To Be A Great Head Coach

Steve Kerr's remarkable success as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors serves as a testament to the idea that prior coaching experience is not always necessary for greatness in the role.

Much like JJ Redick, Kerr had no formal coaching experience when he took over the Warriors in 2014. However, his impact was immediate and profound, leading the team to six NBA Finals appearances and securing four NBA titles in just a decade.

Before his coaching career, Kerr had significant experience in basketball management and broadcasting. He served as the General Manager and President of the Phoenix Suns from 2007 to 2010, providing him with valuable insight into team dynamics, player evaluation, and the overall mechanics of an NBA franchise.

This background undoubtedly helped Kerr transition smoothly into his coaching role, despite the absence of direct coaching experience.

Kerr's success story illustrates that a deep understanding of the game, leadership skills, and the ability to manage star players can sometimes outweigh the traditional coaching apprenticeship. His approach emphasized ball movement, three-point shooting, and a strong defensive mindset, revolutionizing the Warriors and setting new standards in the NBA.

For JJ Redick, Kerr's trajectory offers a blueprint and a source of encouragement. While Redick has not held coaching or executive positions, his extensive playing career has given him a comprehensive understanding of modern basketball strategies and player psychology.

Redick has also gained experience in analyzing and discussing the game through his media work, which can contribute to his potential effectiveness as a coach.

Steve Kerr's unprecedented success without prior coaching experience suggests that Redick should not be overly concerned about his lack of a coaching resume. If he can leverage his playing experience, understanding of the game, and leadership qualities effectively, Redick has the potential to succeed as a head coach, much like Kerr did with the Warriors.
