Byron Scott offers sage advice for JJ Redick if he lands Lakers job

After yet another collapse against the Denver Nuggets in the NBA Playoffs, a plethora of big headlines came out of the Anthony Davis-led Los Angeles Lakers. LeBron James’ free agency was one of them and the other was their search for a new head coach to replace Darvin Ham. There has been a short list of candidates like Micah Nori, Sam Cassell, and James Borrego. But, none have been as intriguing as JJ Redick. The fact that the analyst and former player had no head coaching experience on the professional level even raised Byron Scott’s eyebrows.

JJ Redick has insane ball knowledge. He has shown it in podcasts like The Old Man and The Three and Mind The Game all the way to the sidelines with his reporting. Unfortunately, the Lakers’ head coaching position has got to be one of the most scrutinized seats in all of sports. The fact that LeBron James is considering free agency and that Anthony Davis had some statements about their coaching during losses in the NBA Playoffs makes it tougher.

Then, Lakers great Byron Scott added some gas to the already scorching hot flame, via TMZ Sports.

“It’s hard jumping in that seat as a first-time head coach. I don’t know if he has what it takes to be a great head coach in the NBA but again if he gets that opportunity, we’ll find out real soon,” he said about JJ Redick.

There is still no certainty that the Lakers are going to hire Redick for the position. But, if the Purple and Gold do so, Byron Scott can already see how this situation will be. It might be similar to an acquisition made by the Brooklyn Nets not too long ago.

“[Nash] never had any coaching experience and it didn’t really work out well in Brooklyn for him,” he declared.

While he had some hard-hitting truths got dropped on the analyst, Byron Scott still offered to help the Lakers just in case. After all, he did win the 2008 Coach of the Year award with the New Orleans Hornets.

What do the Lakers need to fix?

A big issue for the LeBron James and Anthony Davis-led squad’s collapse was that they had the personnel but no schemes were effectively run. At some point in their NBA Playoffs run and the 82-game campaign, it was even a question whether or not they were running set plays. This led to some very nasty losses and narrow wins. Some were only bailed out by the veteran acumen of their two stars along with some other role players.

The Lakers were a middle of the pack team. They just so happened to get a lot of buckets through transition. Their pace of 100.9 which ranked fourth in the league got them the sixth-highest points per game in the league. This had them clock in at 118 points a night. But, this might be deceptive. It is because their offense was not very potent. They only had a 115.9 rating which was good for 15th.

Defensively, it was a disaster. They allowed 117.4 points a night which meant they allowed the eighth-most points in the association. These easy-pick-apart schemes got the Lakers a 115.3 defensive rating which ranked them at 16th. All of this happened while they had an All-Defensive player in Anthony Davis too.
