BYU loses guard to Virginia in transfer portal

BYU fans won’t soon forget the clutch three Dallin Hall buried to stun No. 7 Kansas. Now, the steady-handed guard is taking his talents across the country — and into a new era at Virginia.

Dallin Hall, the 6-foot-4 point guard who spent three seasons in Provo, announced via Instagram that he’s committed to the Virginia Cavaliers for his final year of eligibility. For Cougar fans who followed Hall’s rise from local standout to one of the more reliable floor generals in the Big 12, the move is both bittersweet and revealing.

After a strong sophomore campaign in which he averaged 9.0 points and 5.1 assists while starting 30 games, Hall’s role diminished in 2025 with the emergence of projected NBA lottery pick Egor Demin. Despite the dip in starts and stats (6.8 PPG, 4.2 APG), Hall’s efficiency and leadership never wavered. Virginia, coming off a 15–17 season and a coaching change, offers a fresh start — and a bigger role. New head coach Ryan Odom sees Hall as the backcourt stabilizer UVA has been missing.

Hall’s game translates well to the Cavaliers’ system. A career 35.5% shooter from beyond the arc and a high-level facilitator (27.0% assist rate in 2025), Hall projects to be Virginia’s best ball distributor. He thrives in pick-and-roll scenarios, can create off the bounce, and isn’t afraid of the big moment — just ask Kansas. With his size (6’4”) and poise, he adds veteran presence to a retooled backcourt alongside Duke Miles and Jacari White.

Will Richie Saunders return to BYU or test NBA Draft waters?

This departure marks the end of an era for Hall and BYU. Cougar fans watched him grow through a coaching change, the Big 12 transition, and memorable wins. While his exit leaves a gap, it also signals a shift toward BYU’s youth movement under new head coach Kevin Young.

Hall’s next chapter will unfold in Charlottesville, but his legacy in Provo is secure. As he gears up for a new challenge in the ACC, BYU fans will be watching — and likely cheering — from afar.
