The Detroit Pistons announced on Thursday that star point guard Cade Cunningham had been diagnosed with a collapsed lung. Reports indicated that the injury is considered mild and that, at the time, the Pistons were optimistic about getting the two-time All-Star back for the start of the NBA playoffs.
Cunningham is in the midst of another big year. Now in his fifth season with the Pistons, the 6-foot-6 guard is averaging 24.5 points on 46.1% shooting, 5.6 rebounds, a career-high 9.9 assists and 1.5 steals in 34.4 minutes per game. Cunningham is also knocking down 2.0 triples on a 34.6% clip.
Cunningham’s strong play has been the driving force for the Pistons all season long. They have the best record in the Eastern Conference at 52-19. As of writing, Detroit is five games ahead of the second-seeded Boston Celtics.
NBA guru Shams Charania provided a crucial update on Cunningham’s health on Wednesday. According to the renowned ESPN reporter, the timeline remains the same for the 24-year-old as Cunningham progresses in his road to recovery.
"I'm told that the Detroit Pistons are optimistic, and there is hope internally there that Cade Cunningham will be able to return in time for the start of the NBA playoffs in mid-April," Charania said.
"But right now, he's still just one week removed from that collapsed lung. So he's very much in the recovery phase of the process. He's starting to do some small steps in the facility, do some small light work in the weight room. But he still has to recover from that collapsed lung.”
Charania went on to say that he expects Detroit to provide a more concrete timetable on Cunningham’s return in the coming weeks.
“The Pistons expect, I'm told, to have a better sense on a complete and exact timeline for Cade Cunningham in the next one to two weeks," Charania said.
