Cam Johnson undisturbed by a sudden bench move from the Nets: “Control what you can control”

Cam Johnson is taking it one step at a time about his slipping role within the Brooklyn Nets this season.

From being a full-time starter for the ball club, Cam has seen a significant demotion around himself lately for the Nets. But the 28-year-old wingman couldn't care less about what has been happening for as long as he's contributing to the team's success.

“Control what you can control,” Johnson told Nets Daily. “That’s what I always try to do, that’s what I pride myself on and just trying to contribute to the team in any way that I can.

“It’s not the first time it’s happened to me in my career, and it’s not any stranger than any other circumstances. But my job is to help this team win games, and that’s what I’m gonna do, whether I’m starting, coming off bench, playing 10 minutes or playing 40 minutes.”

A down season for Cam

After signing a new four-year contract with the Nets for $94MM last summer, Cam didn't entirely expect that this 2023-24 season would prove to be challenging in his intention to repay the franchise's commitment.

The forward has seen an infuriating run this year mainly due to injuries by missing the team's 16 games as hamstring, leg, and ankle issues have swarmed his availability. Upon these, his statistical numbers were massively affected as he is now averaging an underwhelming 13.7 points in 45.2 percent shooting rate per game.

No issue about bench demotion

Cam ultimately saw himself lately coming off the bench. And although losing the starting spot is undeniably a tough blow, Nets interim mentor Kevin Ollie isn't seeing any pouting from the Brooklyn wing.

“We’re going to always look at what’s best for the team,” Kevin Ollie said afterward. “I just thought he took care of his minutes, and finished the game for us. … I loved his intensity and how he tried to win for our team.”

It is yet to be seen when Johnson will find himself back in the team's starting unit. But with 14 games left and the Nets in dire need to salvage their season, Cam can only try to will his way in full power.
