Donovan Mitchell is in the midst of another big year for the Cleveland Cavaliers. The six-time All-Star barely missed out on a triple-double in the Cavs’ 140-138 overtime loss to the Miami Heat on Monday after dropping 28 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists.
In 10 games played so far this season, Mitchell has produced averages of 30.4 points on 51.0% shooting, 4.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 1.5 steals, while also knocking down 4.2 triples on a 40.4% clip.
The 29-year-old’s hot streak, however, has now been put on hold. This is after the Cavs announced their decision on Mitchell ahead of Wednesday’s rematch against the Heat.
The Cavs are 7-4 this season. They were coming off a four-game winning streak before they suffered a deflating overtime loss to the Heat on Monday, courtesy of an Andrew Wiggins inbound alley-oop with just 0.4 seconds remaining.
After Tuesday’s hard-fought encounter, the Cavs and the Heat go at it again on Wednesday. Miami will host the matchup again at Kaseya Center, but Cleveland will be significantly undermanned in their upcoming rematch.
The Cavs announced on Tuesday via the official injury report that Mitchell will not play on Wednesday night. The 6-foot-3 guard will be sidelined for rest purposes with Cleveland set to play on the second night of a back-to-back set against the Toronto Raptors on Thursday.
Mitchell sat out on Oct. 31 due to a hamstring injury, but it does not seem related to the team’s decision to have him sit out on Wednesday.
It is worth noting that Darius Garland (toe/injury management) and Evan Mobley (rest) have both also been ruled out for the Miami game. Larry Nance Jr. is questionable due to a left knee contusion.
As for the Heat, Bam Adebayo (toe sprain) and Tyler Herro (ankle surgery) remain out, while Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Davion Mitchell have been cleared to play.
Tip-off from Kaseya Center on Wednesday night is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
