Cavaliers Named As Serious Contender for Peyton Watson

As Cavaliers President of Basketball Operations Koby Altman and staff look to make a big move to finish off their off-season, Peyton Watson still looks to be at the top of their target list.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin dove into the conversation on The NBA Today, stating he heard the Cavs could very well be acquiring the Denver Nuggets restricted free agent.

"I'm told they are a "serious candidate" to land Peyton Watson." McNemamin told the panel. "There's other teams that have been interested in Watson as well, but they are a serious candidate."

While the talk for the Cavs post-LeBron decision has been between Watson and Atlanta Hawks wing Jonathan Kuminga, the Cavaliers fanbase is pleading for some news soon.

While both guys are restricted free agents with their current teams, both guys could fill a need for the Cavaliers roster, but if it were to come down to one or the other, Watson might be the better fit of the two.

What Watson could do for the Cavaliers

With the needed depth at the wing position, Peyton Watson fits the three-and-d type of role. Last season with the Denver Nuggets, Watson shot 41% from the perimeter on a career-high 3.6 attempts per game. He also had his best shooting season from the free-throw line shooting 73% on 3.5 attempts per game.

Guarding the perimeter, Watson also held his own, holding opponents to 36% from three, while also being amongst the top 20 players in the NBA in Blocks Per Game in both the 24 and 25 seasons.

Watson also brings the playoff experience with him, being a part of the Denver Nuggets', having bee 2023 title team. Something he can assist the Cavaliers with as they look to grow from their 2026 Eastern Conference Finals appearance.

If the Cavaliers can bring Watson in, he could be an excellent fit along with Evan Mobley as anchors of the Cavs' defense. If they can keep Jarrett Allen, which would be a big if in this circumstance, the Cavaliers would be able to stretch the floor more than they were able to with Dean Wade, while also eliminating the revolving door of the fifth starter we have seen throughout the Donovan Mitchell era.

While the Nuggets and Watson weigh their options for the future, the Cavaliers continue to figure out whether they can get Watson to Cleveland, and what exactly the right price would be to mat the risk to match the reward.
