For all the trade speculation that tends to accompany every NBA offseason, there appears to be little expectation around the league that Donovan Mitchell is going anywhere.
According to sources and a few related reports, the Cavaliers remain committed to Mitchell and their veteran core as they prepare for the draft and free agency.
“The Cavaliers are insisting that they can pretty much run things back with their star quartet,” wrote Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports.
That quartet, of course, consists of Mitchell, James Harden, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen.
The Cavs reached the Eastern Conference finals this season for the first time since 2018 before falling to the Knicks. Despite the disappointing finish, team officials have consistently expressed confidence in the roster assembled by president of basketball operations Koby Altman.
Mitchell remains at the center of those plans.
No matter, rival executives continue to monitor the Cavs’ situation, given the financial challenges facing teams operating near the top of the salary structure.
But there’s absolutely zero thought of a Mitchell trade.
Instead, the prevailing belief around the league is that the Cavs will focus on tweaking the roster around their core rather than making a franchise-altering move involving their biggest star.
