Cavs Signing Undrafted Rookie Justin Powell
Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The Cavaliers intend to sign undrafted rookie shooting guard Justin Powell, agent George Langberg told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Powell is 6-foot-6 and spent each of the past three years with a different college program — first with Auburn, then with Tennessee, then Washington State. He then declared for the 2023 NBA Draft but was not selected.

In 34 games with Washington State last season, Powell averaged 10.4 points and shot 43 percent on 3-pointers. He played for the Heat in the NBA Summer League and was expected to sign a camp deal in Miami. For whatever reason, he’s signing with the Cavs instead.

Powell’s deal with the Cavs is also likely an Exhibit 10, make-good contract that will count toward the preseason roster of 21. His spot won’t count toward the regular-season roster unless he makes the team in that scenario.

In other words, Powell appears likely to start the year with the Cleveland Charge of the G League.

Cleveland still has four spots available on its preseason roster, with training camp set to tip off on Oct. 3.
