Last week, New Balance dropped the news that Cleveland Cavaliers star guard Darius Garland would be officially joining the organization's family on a multi-year contract.
After Tuesday's practice, the 23-year-old was asked why he chose that route in lieu of other, more common footwear franchises
"It’s a new start," Garland said. "Family is super close-knit. Think it’s like seven or eight guys and Cam [Brink] from Stanford. It’s family-oriented, which I love. Just something new. I’m tired of wearing the same shoes everyone else is wearing. Everybody's wearing Kobe's, KD's, Bron's. Looking for something new.”
Of those current NBA players Garland brought up, New Balance has partnerships with Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard, Chicago Bulls swingman Zach LaVine, Atlanta Hawks guard Dejounte Murray and Philadelphia 76ers combo man Tyrese Maxey.
"I want DG’s to be a thing for sure," Garland eagerly responded to question about a possible future signature shot. "We will see."
Garland will be able to show off his New Balance kicks when the Cavs hit the road for four straight games. Cleveland kicks off a rigorous trip on Friday night against the Miami Heat in South Beach. From there, the wine-and-gold will travel to Orlando for a second go-round vs. the Magic, followed by a two-game mini series in Boston against the Celtics.
The Cavs All-Star point guard is coming off one of his best games of the season in a win vs. Orlando, where he put up 26 points and nine assists without a single turnover.
