Cavs vs. Hawks: Late-season matchup with playoff implications

The Cavaliers don’t have much left to sort out in the regular season standings, but Wednesday’s matchup against the Atlanta Hawks could still offer a useful preview of what’s ahead.

With three games remaining, Cleveland’s playoff position is mostly settled. Still, the Hawks are a potential first-round opponent, making this a meaningful test as the postseason approaches.

The Cavs are expected to play their regular rotation, though Donovan Mitchell is listed as questionable due to the ankle injury he sustained late in Sunday’s win over Indiana. Dean Wade and Jaylon Tyson are also questionable, while Thomas Bryant will be out.

Atlanta, meanwhile, still has something at stake. The Hawks are trying to avoid slipping into the play-in tournament, which should give them added urgency down the stretch.

From a statistical standpoint, Cleveland enters the matchup with a slight edge. The Cavs rank seventh in offensive rating (119.1) and ninth in net rating (+4.3), while the Hawks sit 15th offensively (116.2) but have been stronger defensively, ranking eighth (113.7).

The teams last met during NBA Cup group play, with Atlanta earning a 130-123 win.
