Celtics All-Star Has Offseason Knee Surgery

A Boston Celtics All-Star has gone under the knife this offseason.

Things haven't turned out the way the Celtics intended in many respects this year.

Boston followed up a 2023-24 season that ended with 64 regular season victories and its 18th NBA championship with a respectable 61-win regular season run in 2024-25.

With the Celtics projected to owe north of $500 million in combined salary and luxury tax obligations in 2025-26, per ESPN's Bobby Marks, the club was aware that its personnel could look significantly different after this season.

Boston's top eight players — All-Star forwards Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, All-Defensive guards Jrue Holiday and Derrick White, big men Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford, 2025 Sixth Man of the Year guard Payton Pritchard, and sharpshooting bench forward Sam Hauser — knew that their time together was likely to last just two seasons, so they were understandably hopeful they could defend their title this summer.

Instead, the Celtics struggled through health and chemistry issues during the playoffs, ultimately falling 4-2 to the New York Knicks in the second round.

Now, the Celtics' second-best player will be sidelined for the whole offseason.

Per Shams Charania of ESPN, Jaylen Brown has opted to get an arthroscopic procedure on his right knee.

The Celtics anticipate that Brown will be back in time for the start of the club's 2025-26 training camp run. Brown becomes the second Boston All-Star to undergo surgery in as many months, following Jayson Tatum's May Achilles tendon repair.

Brown, the reigning Finals MVP, had been dealing with a partially torn right meniscus since March, per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. He performed admirably all things considered, averaging 22.1 points on .441/.333/.758 shooting splits, 7.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 1.0 steals a night in 11 healthy postseason contests.
