Celtics Announce Contract Extension for Coach Joe Mazzulla: ‘A Gifted Leader’

The Celtics have locked in their head coach for the long term, announcing Friday that Joe Mazzulla has signed a multiyear deal with the 2024 NBA champs.

“Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics,” president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a statement.

Stevens praised Mazzulla’s passion for the franchise and his early success, which includes averaging more than 60 wins per season and capturing the 2024 NBA championship.

Mazzulla joined Boston’s staff as an assistant in 2019 and was unexpectedly promoted to head coach before the 2022-23 season after Ime Udoka was suspended. Udoka never returned, and Mazzulla was given the job permanently.

In three seasons as head coach, Mazzulla has posted a 182-64 regular season record, good for a .740 winning percentage, along with a 33-17 mark in the playoffs. He finished third in Coach of the Year voting in 2022-23 and fourth the following season.

The 36-year-old now faces a new challenge in 2025-26. Boston has retooled its roster to trim costs after exceeding the second tax apron last year. Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis are no longer with the team, and Jayson Tatum is expected to miss most or all of the season as he recovers from a torn Achilles.
