The Boston Celtics are on a roll, winning seven of their last nine games, including back-to-back victories over two of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders, the Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks.

The team’s surprising success without Jayson Tatum has been fueled by the strong play of Jaylen Brown, now in his tenth year with the organization. Brown has taken over as the facilitator of the offense and Boston’s primary scoring option, thriving in that role.

The 29-year-old wing has averaged 29.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 49.9% from the field and 34.7% from beyond the arc. He has done all this in 33.4 minutes per game, guiding the Celtics to a 12–9 record.

Brown has appeared in 21 games this season despite dealing with multiple nagging injuries, including a preseason hamstring issue and more recent lower back spasms. Still, understanding his importance to the team’s success, he has continued to push through discomfort to be there on the court with his teammates.

Ahead of Thursday’s game against the Washington Wizards, however, Brown appears destined to miss his first matchup of the year. The Celtics listed him as doubtful on their injury report due to a non-Covid illness. Fortunately, it is not a physical setback, but given the doubtful designation, it seems to be a significant sickness that will require recovery time.

Brown made his debut with the Celtics in 2016 after being selected as the third overall pick in the NBA Draft, and since then he has steadily grown into one of the league’s most consistent players.

Over the past decade, he has earned four All-Star selections and one All-NBA honor, cementing his place among the game’s elite. His ability to lead Boston alongside Tatum has been central to the team’s success, highlighted by the duo guiding the Celtics to the 2024 NBA championship. Brown’s performance in that Finals series was dominant, earning him Finals MVP honors and solidifying his legacy in franchise history.

Currently playing under a five-year, $285.4 million contract that runs through the 2028–29 season, Brown remains a focal point of Boston’s future. If he cannot suit up on Thursday against the Wizards, he will have another opportunity to return Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers. His status and any updates will continue to be closely monitored.
