Former lottery pick Devin Carter is having his Exhibit 10 contract converted to a two-way deal by the Celtics, league sources tell Michael Scotto of HoopsHype ( Twitter link).
Carter, 24, was the 13th overall pick in the 2024 draft, but his NBA career got off to a slow start as he spent much of his rookie year recovering from shoulder surgery.
Even after eventually making his debut for Sacramento in January 2025, the former Providence guard struggled to establish himself as a consistent part of the team’s rotation. In 74 games across two seasons for the Kings, Carter averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes per contest, posting an underwhelming shooting line of .401/.274/.674.
Looking to duck below the tax line, Sacramento attached a second-round pick to Carter in order to trade him to Atlanta in June, and the Hawks subsequently waived him in September, clearing a path for him to sign a camp deal with Boston.
While Carter’s playing time this preseason has been limited due to an illness, he was impressive in his Celtics debut on October 8 vs. Cleveland, racking up 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists in 25 minutes of action. Boston outscored the Cavaliers by 22 points during his time on the floor.
The Celtics had been carrying an open two-way slot alongside Amari Williams and Dillon Mitchell, so no corresponding roster move will be necessary to make room for Carter. His two-way contract will pay him a $678,882 salary and make him eligible to appear in up to 50 regular season games.
