The Boston Celtics have held the Dallas Mavericks to under 100 points in both matchups to begin the NBA Finals. Joe Mazzulla's team has done an exceptional job of taking away the corner three-point shot and the lob passes toward the rim, which have been staples of Dallas' offense this season.
During a postgame news conference on Sunday, Luka Doncic admitted that Boston's defense has been both physical and impressive.
"I mean, they are physical, yeah," Doncic said. "But they try to guard one-on-one. I think today they tried to help more. I was able to get some teammates open. But they are physical. They are very physical. We let them be physical. So they are pretty, pretty amazing on defense."
The Celtics have arguably the best defensive backcourt in the NBA. Jrue Holiday and Derrick White were selected to the All-Defense Second Team this season. Boston also has two of the top two-way forwards in the world, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, thriving as high-level defenders. Kristaps Porzingis is an elite rim protector and shot deterrent, and Al Horford is a versatile veteran.
As such, the Mavericks are finding it hard to break down the Celtics' defensive system. They can't rely on Doncic to manipulate what Boston does, as the Celtics tend to guard one-on-one rather than consistently send help. Boston's ability to switch every position and guard up or down has stifled the Mavericks when hunting for mismatches or opening up passing lanes.
Despite all the offensive talent within its ranks, Boston's identity still resides on the defensive side of the ball. The Celtics take pride in shutting teams down. Dallas must find a way to crack open the defense if it wants a chance of getting back into this series. The Mavs can't rely on Luka Doncic to create everything. Boston's defense doesn't fall for that ploy.
The next two games are going to be very interesting. The Mavericks are playing for a championship and must step up and prove they're capable of challenging the Celtics. Otherwise, Boston will hoist the Larry O'Brien trophy after a sweep or gentleman's sweep.
