The Boston Celtics have gotten great value from Payton Pritchard's rookie extension. Now that deal is giving them even more value, as Pritchard signed a new extension that should keep him in a Celtics uniform through 2030.
Tuesday, Pritchard's agents announced he'd agreed to add two years and $44.2M to his current contract, which runs through 2027-28. Although they traded Jaylen Brown this summer, the Celtics now have six of their most important players locked up for at least three more seasons.
It was a gamble for the Celtics to give Pritchard $30M over four years back in 2023, after a season where the third-year guard played only 48 games and averaged 5.6 points. Since then, Pritchard has missed only five games in three seasons while becoming a crucial part of the rotation.
In 2024, Pritchard upped his scoring to 9.6 PPG and put up stellar offensive numbers for the champion Celtics team. Lineups with Pritchard in them outscored opponents by 11.9 points per 100 possessions. He also displayed an uncanny knack for buzzer-beating shots, regularly nailing demoralizing long-range shots in the NBA Finals.

Pritchard took it to another level in 2024-25, averaging 14.3 points, shooting 40.7 percent from three-point range and winning Sixth Man of the Year, all while earning just $6.7M. Last season, with Jayson Tatum out most of the season, Pritchard averaged 17 points, 5.2 assists and 3.9 rebounds while finishing 17th in the league in three-pointers.
The low value of Pritchard's current contract — only $7.8M this season — made it that $4.2M is the most Pritchard could get on a two-year extension. Because his salary is so low, he's eligible to extend his deal for 140 percent of the NBA's Estimated Average Player Salary, with eight percent raises.
Payton Pritchard is extending via the Estimated Average Player Salary (EAPS). Because his current contract is less than EAPS, Prichard is eligible to extend for 140% of EAPS with 8% raises. That should look like this for Pritchard:

28-29: $21.2M
29-30: $22.9M (mutual option)
Pritchard received a mutual option for his 2029-30 deal, which both gives him financial security and allows him and the Celtics to explore an extension in the summer of 2029. He'd clearly get more on the open market, but Pritchard wanted to stay in Boston and get life-changing money, rather than test free agency in 2028.
It's a mutually beneficial deal that was possible because the Celtics had faith in a young player early in his career and gave him the opportunities to develop into one of the best bench players in the league. Pritchard and the Celtics have been great for each other. He should be a fixture in green for years to come.
