The Boston Celtics came into this offseason with the set goal in mind of shedding salary in order to get under the second apron of the luxury tax.

With a new owner in the fold, Brad Stevens wanted to make sure to get under the most punitive part of the luxury tax. They have made a large number of moves in order to fix that.

Stevens decided to trade both Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to get off their big contracts. The amount of money they have saved is staggering.

The Boston Celtics are almost out of the luxury tax completely

Boston has saved over $300 million with the myriad of moves that they have made.

Boston has even traded Georges Niang, who they got in return for Porzingis in the trade from the Atlanta Hawks. Trading him helped save a ton of money from the luxury tax

Stevens has saved so much money that they are just hovering over the first apron of the luxury tax. There's a good chance that they end up getting underneath that threshold as well.

If there was any offseason in which this team would take these drastic measures, this is the offseason to do it with Jayson Tatum out with a torn Achilles.

Boston is still looking around for somewhere to reroute Anfernee Simons after getting him in return from Portland in the Holiday trade. Shedding his salary would get them under that first apron.

It wouldn't be shocking if the Celtics decided to skirt the luxury tax entirely. They are only $9.4 million over the luxury tax line, so getting under that threshold this year could save them money to make moves next offseason.

The concern among Celtics fans is that these moves might not make the team competitive enough once they have everyone healthy for the 2026-27 season.

How Bill Chisholm wants Stevens to build the team after this offseason is going to determine how quickly the Celtics get back into title contention. Does he want to save money? Or does he want to win championships?

Answering that question likely won't happen until next summer when Tatum is ready to return from his terrible injury. How Stevens builds the team around Tatum, Jaylen Brown, and Derrick White will be key.
