The Boston Celtics didn't spend as much time in the NBA's Walt Disney World bubble as the Los Angeles Lakers and Miami Heat, but the team still spent months away from home.
Many players have spoken about how difficult life in the bubble was. From not being able to see family to limited activities, the bubble just wasn't made for some people. One player who actually enjoyed life in the bubble, though, was Celtics guard Marcus Smart, who penned an article in The Players' Tribune.
“I was totally ready for it to suck, I’m not gonna lie. But you know what? The bubble, it actually turned out to be … pretty damn great,” Smart wrote.
Smart discussed how he put things into perspective after testing positive for the coronavirus. The pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement led him to believe we are living in a significant moment in time.
While in the bubble, players frequently took the time to discuss racial equality and social justice, and that's something that Smart couldn't ignore in his writing.
“It was like, here we are out here standing up for our rights, and at the same time there’s a once-in-a-lifetime pandemic out here killing Black and brown people at higher rates than everyone else,” Smart wrote.
Before the NBA season resumed, players advocated for the spotlight to be placed on the Black Lives Matter movement, and they accomplished that very well. Not only was the floor painted with the words "Black Lives Matter," but players also got to wear the names of various social causes on their jerseys and discuss things other than basketball in their postgame press conferences.
