Among the notable teams to express interest in trading for Zubac were the Indiana Pacers and Boston Celtics, HoopsHype has learned.Dating back from last season through Monday, Zubac is having the best stretch of his career, averaging 16.3 points on 62.2 percent shooting from the field, 12.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks.
Due to superstars Jayson Tatum's and Jaylen Brown's massive super max contracts, Brad Stevens has stated that it is imperative to retain future first round picks and their team friendly deals in order to fill out a competitive roster moving forward. The asking price for Zubac previously was reportedly two first round picks, so if Stevens was to trade for Zubac that would be a departure from his stated mission.
Then again, due to the Celtics impressive play sans Tatum (plus Holiday, Horford, and Porzingis) Stevens could look at the Celtics having a strong shot at a title this season if Jayson returns and the team adds a quality big. You only have so many shots at a title so Stevens needs to weigh that as well.
The NBA trade deadline is February 5th this season. The Celtics could also attempt to fortify their roster afterwards when contract buyouts take place. Having a chance to compete for a title and get playing time could be very enticing to any quality big man who negotiates a buyout.
