Celtics still see path to keeping Jaylen Brown

Just because the Celtics have explored trading Jaylen Brown doesn’t mean they’re convinced he’ll be leaving Boston.

According to Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Celtics still believe it’s possible to mend any fences with Brown after discussing him in trade talks with the Bucks centered on Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The report says Boston does not view the situation as irreparable and believes a reconciliation remains a realistic possibility.

That differs from the perception around the league, where rival executives continue to believe the Celtics will ultimately move Brown before next season.

Boston’s approach has remained consistent throughout the offseason. If the Celtics decide to trade Brown, they’re expected to seek a return that allows them to remain in championship contention alongside Jayson Tatum rather than beginning any sort of rebuild.

Brown also becomes eligible in July to sign a two-year contract extension worth as much as $141.8 million, giving both sides another avenue to reaffirm their commitment to one another.

As an aside, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Celtics have asked interested teams for at least four first-round picks as part of a return for Brown.

If so, that could significantly close doors on a potential deal.
