Celtics 'unlikely' to re-sign this former All-Star free agent

The Boston Celtics are unlikely to re-sign Blake Griffin ahead of the new season. According to a report by Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, the Celtics would 'likely welcome a return,' but Griffin is considering his future.

“The Celtics would likely welcome a return by veteran big man Blake Griffin, who played well last year and was a strong locker room presence, but for now, that appears unlikely as Griffin considers his future," Himmelsbach reported.

Griffin, 34, isn't the athletic high-flyer that dominated the NBA during his early career. Instead, the veteran big man has become a floor spacing role-player who provides more off-court leadership than on-court impact.

Last season, Griffin participated in 41 regular-season games for the Celtics, averaging 4.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per contest.

At this late stage in his career, Griffin is likely looking for a minor role on a contending team — similar to what he comprised in Boston last season and with the Brooklyn Nets the year before.

However, Griffin's immediate options are drying up as teams begin to finalize their rosters ahead of training camp. Boston will be in no rush to fill their 15th roster spot.

In recent years, Brad Stevens has entered the new season with the final roster spot left open to provide his team flexibility. However, Boston needs another big man.

There are injury concerns regarding all three primary bigs in the rotation. Griffin's presence, understanding of the system and relationship with the roster make him the ideal candidate.

Nevertheless, after a fantastic career, Griffin could potentially be considering retirement. After all, the former Clippers standout has gone from being a featured member of the offense to a circumstantial role player.

Griffin has some big decisions to make, but if he wants to win a championship, Boston is likely his best bet.
