The Celtics are “actively engaged” in trade talks regarding Jaylen Brown with “multiple interested teams,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said Wednesday during the network’s NBA draft coverage ( Twitter video link).

Several teams informed Charania that they feel “a sense of purpose” from Boston in the negotiations. However, he cautions that doesn’t guarantee a deal will be made, citing Brown’s supermax contract, worth roughly $183MM over the next three seasons, as a potential impediment. Charania adds that “the urgency from either side could change as the weeks go on.”

The desire to pursue a Brown deal comes after he was offered to Milwaukee as part of Boston’s bid for Giannis Antetokounmpo. There’s a concern that Brown may not feel fully respected with the Celtics and might prefer to be the star on his own team rather than sharing the spotlight with Jayson Tatum.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday night, president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said he held several meetings with Brown before the offer to the Bucks became public. Stevens said they had “really good, candid conversations,” but didn’t deny that he’s currently discussing potential Brown trades.

Two sources close to the situation told Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated that trade talks regarding Brown took place on Tuesday, with some conversations initiated by rival teams and others started by the Celtics. “They are hunting a big man,” one executive said. “And they are willing to trade [Brown] to get it.”

Mannix cites Cleveland as a potential landing spot for Brown if the Cavs are willing to part with Evan Mobley. He also notes that Houston has an All-Star center to offer in Alperen Sengun, while Atlanta could put together a package of players that might interest Boston.
