Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley‘s golf swing has been memed for nearly two decades now.
The NBA/television legend however proved all of those haters wrong on Friday when he drilled an impressive eagle at the American Century Championship. This year’s edition of the event marks the 30th of Barkley’s career.

“Just get it on the green,” Barkley responded when asked about what he was trying to do with his shot. “That’s probably the best shot I’ve ever made. And the crowd was going crazy man, it was unbelievable. But it’s been an amazing day. I’m playing with guys that are awesome like Larry the Cable Guy, but the fans are awesome and they normally are. But I’m having a blast. Shoutout to my coach Stan Utley.”
Heading into the event, Barkley was longest shot in the field. The field, which is extremely star-studded, consists of other prominent sports figures such as Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, former Dallas Cowboys quarterback/NFL on CBS analyst Tony Romo, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, former Philadelphia Eagles center/ESPN analyst Jason Kelce and the aforementioned Larry the Cable Guy.
Barkley, who finished in 58th place last year, entered the weekend with 7,500-1 odds at Caesars Sportsbook.
During his NBA playing days, the Auburn alum was named the Most Valuable Player in 1993, earned All-NBA honors in 10 different seasons and was selected to 11 NBA All-Star games. Although he was that good on the court, Barkley is likely more well known nowadays for his role on the iconic “NBA on TNT” show.
The show, which he has been a prominent member of since 2000, moves to ESPN starting next season. The cast of Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal, Kenny “The Jet” Smith and Ernie Johnson have separated themselves as the go-to NBA show for the last 25 years.
“To ESPN, it’s going to be an honor and a privilege to work for you guys,” Barkley said on TNT Sports’ final sendoff. “You guys are the number one sports network in history, and I’m excited for it. You guys got some tremendous talents over there. I’m looking forward to working with those guys.”
“But like I said, man, I just want to say thank you to the NBA, every coach I’ve had, every player I play with, for giving me this magnificent life that I’ve had, I am so lucky and blessed. I’m lucky and blessed. And I want to thank TNT. And even though we’ll never say TNT sports again. I want to thank TNT, for giving me a magnificent life.”
