The Charlotte Hornets are relieving James Borrego of his head-coaching duties after four seasons, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Friday morning.
According to Wojnarowski, Charlotte's dismal showing in last week's play-in tournament largely led to Borrego's dismissal. Although Borrego oversaw the development of Miles Bridges and reigning Rookie Of The Year LaMelo Ball, the big factor appears to be the team losing their first game of the play-in tournament as the No. 10 seed for the second season in a row.
Charlotte suffered blowout losses in both postseason games, which appears to have negated regular season win improvement and player development among Miles Bridges, LaMelo Ball and previously Devonte Graham.

Borrego was 138-163 over his four seasons in Charlotte. He oversaw the team's improvement year over year, with the Hornets going from 23-42 in 2019-20 to 33-39 in 2020-21 to 43-39 this season. The Hornets have also, however, now missed the playoffs for a sixth straight season.
The 44-year-old coach previously served as interim head coach for the Orlando Magic during the 2014-2015 season after Jacque Vaughn was fired with 30 games left in the regular season.
