Charlotte Hornets Losing Streak: What’s Gone Wrong?

The Charlotte Hornets were the talk of the NBA not long ago. After years of rebuilding and false starts, this young, electric team had put together one of the best winning runs the franchise had seen in a long time, blowing out playoff-caliber teams and looking every bit like a squad ready to make some noise in the Eastern Conference. But right now, the Charlotte Hornets’ losing streak is the story, and it is a sudden and painful one.

Charlotte Hornets Losing Streak: What’s Gone Wrong?

Back-to-back losses to the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns have stopped Charlotte’s momentum dead in its track. At 32-33, they are still in the play-in conversation, but the manner in which they lost these two games — poor fourth-quarter play, costly turnovers, and key players disappearing at the worst moments — has raised some serious questions about whether this team is ready for the pressure of a playoff race.

So what exactly has gone wrong? And more importantly, can they fix it before it is too late?

From Unstoppable to Struggling

To understand how jarring this skid feels, you have to appreciate just how good the Hornets were before it. Charlotte had been destroying teams. They beat Boston by 29 points, Indiana by 24. They put together a winning streak that was the franchise’s longest since the 1997-1998 season. At one point, they beat five straight opponents each by at least 15 points, something no other team in the league had managed to do this season.

That is why losing to Miami and Phoenix hurts so much. It is not just two losses on the record. It is the feeling that a team that had found its identity has suddenly lost it again.

The Miami Loss

The game against Miami was one the Hornets absolutely should have won. They were up by three going to fourth quarter. The game was right there. But they were outscored 30-19 in the 4th and walked away with a 128-120 defeat.

The numbers tell the story clearly. Charlotte gave the ball away 12 times to Miami’s six. The Heat scored 50 points in the paint compared to the Hornets’ 42. Their bench also outscored Hornets’ bench 41-32. When games get close and physical late, the Hornets are still making the kinds of mistakes that cost young teams dearly.

LaMelo Ball finished with 21 points but shot just 31.8% from the field and ended the game at a minus -15. Rookie Kon Knueppel was the only one who showed up the way he needed to, exploding for 27 points on 64.3% shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. But one player carrying the load is not enough when the rest of the team goes quiet.

The Phoenix Loss

If Miami showed Charlotte’s late-game problems, Phoenix exposed something deeper: their inability to defend elite scorers when they get going. Devin Booker was simply unstoppable. He finished with 30 points, 10 assists, and went a perfect 15-of-15 from the free throw line. He got to his spots whenever he wanted and drew fouls at will.

Charlotte lost 111-99 as they shot 33.3% from three and turned it over 11 times. Brandon Miller contributed just 11 points on 33.3% shooting. New addition, Coby White managed seven points on 30% shooting.

The good news is that Ball looked sharper here with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists. But the team around him let him down badly.

The First Back-to-Back Losses Since the Suspensions

What makes this Charlotte Hornets losing streak even more significant is what it is being compared to. The last time this team dropped two in a row was during the period when Moussa Diabate and Miles Bridges were both serving suspensions. Charlotte was shorthanded then and had a clear excuse. Right now, the team is at full strength, and that makes these back-to-back defeats harder to explain and harder to accept.

What the Hornets Must Do to Get Back on Track

The talent is still there. This is not a broken team; it is a young team going through a rough patch at a critical moment. But they need to make some adjustments fast, because the play-in race will not wait for them.

The turnover issue needs to be addressed. 12 and 11 turnovers in 2 consecutive games is not a coincidence, it is a habit. The Hornets cannot keep gifting opponents cheap baskets.

Wake Brandon Miller up: Miller is too good a player to go quiet in consecutive games. When he is not attacking, the Hornets’ offense becomes predictable and easy to defend. He needs to be more aggressive – drive at defenders, hunt mismatches  and take his shots without hesitation. The team needs him scoring.

Tighten up the interior defense: Miami scored 50 in the paint. Phoenix got wherever they wanted inside. Diabate and Kalkbrenner need to be more physical around the basket and make rim protection a priority. Giving up that many easy points inside will always make winning difficult.

Fourth-quarter composure: The last two losses have largely been as a result of the team losing concentration in the fourth quarter. The team needs to move the ball, take smarter shots and defend with more intensity when games are tight.

Keep feeding Knueppel: The rookie became the first Hornet ever to win four Rookie of the Month awards recently, and the first player to do so since Paulo Banchero 2022-23.

He has been Charlotte’s most reliable performer across both losses. His shooting, movement, and confidence make a real weapon, and the coaching staff should keep creating situations where he can operate freely. When other struggle, Knueppel has shown he can carry the load.

The Blazers Game is a Must-Win Moment

Charlotte faces the Portland Trail Blazers tonight at 10 p.m. ET, a team that plays at one of the fastest paces in the league. On paper, it is a winnable game, and the Hornets are actually favored. But after dropping two straight, confidence matters just as much as matchups.

This is exactly the kind of game Charlotte needs to win to get it right. A win stops the bleeding and keeps them firmly in the play-in race. Another loss starts to make the skid look like something more serious.

The potential in this group is real. But potential means nothing if they cannot translate it when the pressure is on. In the next game against the Blazers, the Hornets get their first chance to prove that this losing streak is just a bump and not the beginning of something worse.
