The Hornets vs Pacers matchup on Friday night could not come at a better time for Charlotte. The Hornets are fresh off a dominant 127-107 victory over Phoenix , a night in which Kon Knueppel made franchise history .
The Hornets welcome an Indiana squad that is one of the weakest teams in the Eastern Conference this season. With just five games left, and the team still hoping to get a direct playoff spot, Charlotte needs to treat this as a must-win opportunity.
At 41-36, Charlotte is eighth in the East and riding a feel-good wave. Meanwhile, Indiana arrives at Spectrum Center having won three of their last five games, though they were also competitive in those two losses. They sit at 13th place in the East with a record of 18-58.
On paper, this is as close to a free win as Charlotte will get at this stage of the season. However, this group knows better than to take anything for granted.
Thursday night against the Suns was special for several reasons. Six Charlotte players finished in double figures. Miles Bridges led the way with 25 points on a superb 10-of-16 shooting. LaMelo Ball added 15 points and 11 assists, orchestrating the offense with typical brilliance. Coby White contributed 19 off the bench, and Grant Williams chipped in 10. However, the story of the night belonged to Kon Knueppel, who broke Kemba Walker‘s franchise record for three-pointers in a single season. It was a milestone moment in a rookie campaign that continues to rewrite the history books.
Bridges has long been the most experienced voice in the locker room, and his assessment of Knueppel has been clear all season. In his postgame press conference, he said, “For Kon to come and break that record, that speaks volumes about Kon and us as a team. We want everybody to succeed. We don’t care who’s scoring, who’s shooting, just as long as we’re winning games. That just shows our continuity and Kon’s shot-making ability.”
More importantly, what makes this Charlotte team so difficult to prepare for is their collective approach. No single player carries the load every night. Against Phoenix, it was Bridges. Versus the Knicks, it was Knueppel and Ball. In the Memphis game, it was Ball and Miller. Defenses simply cannot key in on one player, and that unpredictability is what makes the Hornets so dangerous heading into these final games.
The Pacers have had an extremely difficult season. With just 18 wins from 76 games, they are among the worst teams in the league this year. They travel to Charlotte without any real play-in ambitions. For Indiana, the remaining games are about pride, development, and lottery positioning.
However, a team with nothing to lose can be a dangerous opponent. Indiana has shown glimpses of attacking intent; for instance, they put 145 points on Chicago just two nights ago and 135 on Miami the game before. If Charlotte switches off defensively or allows the game to become loose and fast-paced, Indiana has the firepower to make this uncomfortable. The Hornets must stay sharp, control the pace, and not allow a team in this state to feed off cheap baskets.
Charlotte leads the entire NBA in three-pointers made this season at 16.3 per game, and Knueppel, fresh off breaking the franchise record, will arrive buzzing on Friday night. Indiana has struggled to contain elite shooters all season. With their roster lacking the defensive personnel to guard Charlotte’s movement-based offense, this could be a long night for the visitors. LaMelo’s playmaking will once again be the key. When he picks apart a defense and finds Knueppel, Miller or Bridges in rhythm, there is very little any opponent can do to stop the avalanche.
Charlotte Hornets: PJ Hall is questionable. Otherwise, the Hornets are close to full strength.
Indiana Pacers: Tyrese Haliburton, Johnny Furphy, Ivica Zubac, Andrew Nembhard, Jarace Walker, Aaron Nesmith, and T.J. McConnell will not play, while Obi Toppin and Pascal Siakam are probable.
The Hornets vs Pacers game is one Charlotte absolutely must win. Indiana is shorthanded and without the defensive quality to contain a Charlotte team that has been among the most explosive offenses since January. Knueppel comes off his franchise record night, Bridges is in form, and Ball continues to orchestrate at an elite level.
As Knueppel himself said after the Knicks win: “We want to play in big-time games. The rest of these games for us are big-time, playoff-like games. They determine our seeding, and we want to give ourselves the best chance we can for the playoffs.”
Ultimately, in this Hornets vs Pacers clash, Charlotte should win this game comfortably and by double figures. The crowd at Spectrum Center will be electric after Thursday’s record-breaking night, and this Hornets team feeds off that energy. Expect a fast start, an early lead, and the Hornets closing it out with authority.
Prediction: Hornets to win by double figures
