Tonight, the Charlotte Hornets (34-34) will battle against the Miami Heat (38-30) in one of the most intriguing matchups of their seven-game homestand.
The Heat have owned this rivalry all season, emerging victorious in all three meetings so far. In fact, 11 days ago, a 128-120 victory over Charlotte ended their six-game winning streak. Tonight, the Hornets get another shot at a team that has proven to be their kryptonite.
It would be hard to imagine Charlotte going 0-4 against Miami in their season series. Hungry for a better Eastern Conference seeding, tonight feels like the night they make their statement.
In their most recent game, the Hornets lost on the road to the San Antonio Spurs, 115-102. Though a disappointing loss, there’s no shame in being beaten by one of the best teams in the league. The Spurs are one of just two teams that already have 50 wins on the season, the other being the reigning NBA champion.
With that in mind, Charlotte has won 18 of their last 24 games, a run that speaks to just how far this young team has come. Kon Knueppel, who has been consistent for weeks, is the current favorite to win Rookie of the Year and averaging 19.3 points per game.
Like the Hornets, the Heat also enter this game on the back of a loss, theirs to the Orlando Magic at home. 7th in the East, they cannot afford to slip further. That being said, Miami is second in the league in points per game (120.4) and rebounds per game (47.0), thanks to Bam Adebayo and Kel’ el Ware.
Although he’s questionable for this game, there’s no talking about this game without talking about Adebayo. Three games ago, Adebayo put up 83 points against the Washington Wizards, the second-highest single-game total in NBA history, surpassing Kobe Bryant‘s 81 and trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s 100. On the season, he’s averaging 20.0 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game.
Charlotte has struggled with interior defense all season, and if Adebayo is available, he’s exactly the kind of player who can exploit it. Hornets centers Ryan Kalkbrenner and Moussa Diabate must bring discipline and physicality because if Adebayo finds his rhythm early, this game could spiral quickly.
LaMelo Ball is the key to everything Charlotte does effectively. If he controls the tempo, keeps his turnovers down, and gets Knueppel and Brandon Miller involved early, they’ll have more than enough firepower to win this game, especially with the addition of what Coby White will do.
Knueppel in particular is a player Miami should be worried about. The fourth overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, he’s been Charlotte’s most consistent performer, his 3-point shooting the kind that gives any defense nightmares. That was more than evident their last matchup, with Knueppel finishing the game with 27 points on 6-10 shooting from 3.
In this Hornets-Heat clash, the biggest question is simple: can Charlotte finally solve a Miami team that has figured them out three times already this season?
Adebayo will be a problem all night, if he plays. But if LaMelo is at his creative best, Knueppel keeps shooting, and Miller shows up, this is very winnable for Charlotte. Expect the game to be tight throughout, with the energy the Hornets draw from the home crowd and their playoff push pushing them over the line. Besides, going 0-4 against the same team in a season is a tough pill to swallow, and this group does not look like a team ready to accept that.
