Hall of Fame point guard Chauncey Billups has addressed the allegations made against him through a statement made by his attorney, Chris Heywood.

Billups was arrested by FBI agents on Thursday and was charged over his alleged involvement in an illegal poker ring. The card game operation began in 2019 and had ties to various organized crime families associated with the Mafia.

The card game operation’s modus operandi was to lure unsuspecting “fish” into playing in high-stakes poker games with the allure of sharing a table alongside former professional athletes such as Billups. The card games were allegedly rigged using various cheating methods, which you can read more about here.

On Thursday, Billups’ attorney released a statement categorically denying his client’s involvement. Heywood claimed the Detroit Pistons legend would never put his legacy at risk in order to rig card games. He added that Billups will be fighting the allegations in court.

“Anyone who knows Chauncey Billups knows he is a man of integrity; men of integrity do not cheat and defraud others,” Heywood wrote, via Shams Charania.

“To believe that Chauncey Billups did what the federal government is accusing him of is to believe that he would risk his hall-of-fame legacy, his reputation, and his freedom. He would not jeopardize those things for anything, let alone a card game.

“Furthermore, Chauncey Billups has never and would never gamble on basketball games, provide insider information, or sacrifice the trust of his team and the League, as it would tarnish the game he has devoted his entire life to.

“Chauncey Billups has never backed down. He does not plan to do so now. He will fight these allegations with the same tenacity that marked his 28-year career. We look forward to our day in court.”

The FBI also arrested Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier over other gambling-related claims. Like Billups, Rozier’s legal team is set to fight the allegations.

Billups will step down as head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers as the legal battle commences. Another former NBA player will take his place on an interim basis.

While the Pistons icon will remain innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt, an unfortunate quote Billups gave during his first postgame press conference of the season won’t help his case in the eyes of the public.
