All eyes were firmly locked on the one-on-one matchup between Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren when the Spurs and Thunder faced off on Wednesday. In the lead-up to the game, both young superstars downplayed their rivalry, but the way they went at each other — just like in their rookie year — suggested otherwise.
In the game's very first possession, Holmgren blocked a lob attempt for Wemby, meeting the Spurs big at the rim to deny him a dunk. For good measure, he also rejected Jeremy Sochan seconds later. The sequence set the tone for the rest of the night as Holmgren thoroughly outplayed Wembanyama on both ends of the floor.

By the end of the first half, Holmgren had 15 points, three rebounds and two blocks to Wemby's six points, six rebounds and one block. A similar pattern followed the rest of the way in the Thunder's 105-93 victory.

While some would blame Spurs coach Gregg Popovich for Wembanyama attempting just six shots, those who watched the game would know that the Frenchman was visibly hesitant to attack the rim due to Holmgren's looming presence. There were several instances when he turned down post-up opportunities and instead settled for jumpers.
Wembanyama's reluctance to attack was a testament to Holmgren's ability to protect the paint. It encapsulated why the Gonzaga product is an early contender for Defensive Player of the Year.
The rivalry further intensified when Wemby was struck in the face by Holmgren when the latter drove to the rim late in the third quarter. The two again got tangled up while trying to box out during a possession, leading to Wembanyama heading to the locker room.
There were enough plays to suggest that the two young stars are not exactly fond of each other. Shortly before the game, ESPN's Michael C. Wright reported that the Spurs phenom will not even utter Holmgren's name while talking about the Thunder to avoid bringing any attention to their rivalry.
The two 7-footers will next collide on Nov. 19 in San Antonio. Holmgren won the first round, but Wemby will be determined to flip the script in a few weeks.
