Clippers Receive Positive Update on Kawhi Leonard’s Alleged Contract Scandal

The NBA is in a bit of a dead period since the free agency market is mostly dried up and teams await the beginning of training camp.

With not much news about the league flowing out, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard, who is typically silent and out of the public eye, has been at the center of one of the biggest controversies in recent memory.

Journalist Pablo Torre has slowly been leaking information about an alleged “no-show deal” that Leonard signed with a company called Aspiration that allowed him to receive payments from the Clippers without the money going onto their books.

New, apparently incriminating evidence is released seemingly every day, but Los Angeles finally received some good press on the situation.

Former Aspiration CEO Andrei Cherny posted a transcript from a conversation he had with a news outlet, where he told them Leonard had “Three pages of extensive obligations,” and “The contract clearly said that if Leonard did not meet those obligations, Aspiration could terminate the contract.”

The statement from Cherny came just a day after Torre revealed that Leonard received a $1.75 million payment after a nearly $2 million investment in the company from a Clippers executive.

None of these claims have been substantiated by any news outlets or by the league itself, but the pressure has ratcheted up on Leonard and the organization regardless.

Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has repeatedly denied the allegations and maintained that if there was any wrongdoing, he was duped into it.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced that the league is in the process of investigating the situation, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

This is far from the last we’ll be hearing about this situation as more evidence comes to light, but the Clippers get to breathe a bit lighter today.

They have championship aspirations with the dynamic pairing of Leonard and point guard James Harden, so they’re hoping the accusations are put to bed and they can solely focus on basketball.
