The Los Angeles Clippers recently acquired Bradley Beal. The high-scoring shooting guard agreed to a buyout with the Phoenix Suns, allowing him to join the Clippers on a cost-controlled deal.
Despite adding Beal to the rotation, it would appear the Clippers are still looking at ways to improve. According to Lawrence Frank, the franchise is "strongly considering" making a move to acquire Chris Paul. The 20-year veteran is a free agent after leaving the San Antonio Spurs earlier this summer.
"What I'd say about Chris is he's a great player, he's a great Clipper," Frank said, "He obviously possesses some of the qualities we just referenced. Of course, we’re strongly strongly considering him.”
Paul is well-known to the Clippers fan base. He spent six seasons with the franchise during the "lob city" era with Blake Griffin. Arguably, those years were the best of his career. He could welcome one final shot at a championship with a team and fan base that already holds a special connection to his career.
Tyronn Lue is the ideal coach to squeeze the final drops of exceptionalism out of Paul. Furthermore, the idea of bringing Paul back to Los Angeles fits with his personal goals, as he bids to be closer to his family.
"It’s with my family more than anything," Paul said during a recent episode of "The Pat McAfee Show." "...My son just turned 16. My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I’ve lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State — they were in Houston with me — Oklahoma City…I’ve been around a few teams, but I’ve been away from them the last six years. It’s a little different. That’s the conversation."
Not only can the Clippers help Paul make one final run at his biggest basketball goal, but they can also help him slowly transition toward retirement. By being back in L.A., he can be closer to his family and present on a more consistent basis. Then, once next summer arrives, he can, if he chooses, bow out of the NBA on his own terms. And of course, hopefully as a champion.
