Colin Cowherd suggests that the NBA move the three-point line back: 'Make it part of the game, not the game'

The NBA's three-point shooting dilemma took centerstage again during the 2024 NBA In-Season tournament championship game. The OKC Thunder scored only 81 points in a 16-point loss and shot a horrendous 5-32 from three-point range.

That performance had Fox's Colin Cowherd calling out NBA commissioner Adam Silver the following morning. He didn't like Silver's acknowledgment that the league's TV ratings were down but was happy with how they slayed social media.

According to Cowherd, the TV ratings matter, and the game suffers because of the three-point shot.

"Adam Silver needs to change the game. The three-point shot is boring and repetitive. Every team plays the exact same way. I've said before. I would move the three-point arc into the bench, eliminate the corner, and move it back a foot. Make it part of the game, not the game," lamented Colin.

GSW started the trend

The NBA three-point line was integrated into the league during the 1979-80 season to incentivize players to shoot from the outside. However, in recent years, teams have weaponized the three-ball and used it as a strategy to win games, even championships.

Steph Curry's Golden State Warriors in 2015 proved that a team can win a championship by shooting three-pointers. However, that "Dubs" team and their three other title teams were exceptions rather than the rule because they had Curry, the greatest shooter ever, and Klay Thompson, who was just as deadly when he was in his prime.

"But what if you don't have good three-point shooters? That's like saying all kids have to drink milk. What if you're lactose intolerant? I had a stomach ache for 13 years. I was told I had to drink milk. It's not good for everybody. Everybody chased the Warriors for years. One team was winning titles shooting a bunch of threes - the Warriors," he added.

Colin wants Silver to do a Manfred and Goodell

To solve the problem, Cowherd wants NBA Commissioner to follow the lead of his counterparts in the National Football League and Major League Baseball. Roger Goodall and Rob Manfred, respectively, have never been gun-shy about tweaking their leagues' rulebooks, and it's done wonders for them.

"So Adam Silver, do a Rob Manfred. Do a Roger Goodell. Nobody cares about TikTok. Congrats dominating that. You know what the NFL cares about? Fox, Amazon, Netflix, CBS, ESPN, that's what they care about, their broadcast partners because that's driving the money in the league. Butts in seat and butts on the couch watching TV," he added.

Silver defended the three-point shot from Shaquille O'Neal's criticism last month. According to him, the game has evolved so much to the point that even big men today can shoot the three-ball. He, however, did not discount the possibility of moving the line back and said this season is a good opportunity to study the game before making changes, if at all. Let's see what he does.
