Colorado police are reportedly investigating Grizzlies' Ja Morant

The Grizzlies suspended Ja Morant, and now the Colorado Police Department is investigating the incident that involved the Memphis guard.

Morant went live on Instagram early Saturday morning from a gentleman's club called Shotgun Willie's in Glendale, Colorado. During his broadcast, he displayed what appeared to be a handgun. Memphis responded by suspending Morant for "at least" two games.

In the state of Colorado, people are allowed to carry a firearm anywhere without a permit, except for federal property. However, it is illegal to possess a firearm while under the influence of alcohol. Morant wasn't seen drinking on Instagram Live, but people seen with him were. Presumably, the intoxication charge is what the police are investigating, as it's unlikely that Shotgun Willie's is located on federal land.

Morant may be in more dire trouble when it comes to the NBA. NBA rules prohibit taking guns onto team property or when traveling on team business. According to the CBA, violating the gun rule opens Morant up to a fine of up to $50K from the NBA commissioner and suspend him for a "definite or indefinite period."

In 2010, David Stern gave Gilbert Arenas a 50-game suspension for bringing guns into the Washington Wizards' locker room. The 50 games represented the remainder of the NBA season, so it's not necessarily setting precedent for Morant. However, commissioner Adam Silver isn't limited by the CBA from issuing any length of suspension—including one that might keep Morant out of the playoffs.

Flashing a gun on Instagram live is a bad idea, though not necessarily illegal. But bringing a gun on an out-of-state NBA road trip is a really bad idea that's also really against league rules. It might cost Morant the rest of this season.
